Another year, another birthday!

When my children were younger, we always made a point of throwing them a simple party. While the celebrator was fast asleep, we secretly put on party decorations. As soon as he/she wakes up and walks out of the bedroom, his/her face lights up, joyfully jumping up and down at the sight of the decorations and gifts. Cake was a must, as so was pancit, or spaghetti, or carbonara, or palabok, which represents long life.

내 아이들이 어렸을 때, 우리는 항상 그들에게 간단한 파티를 열어주기로 했다. 축하하는 사람이 깊이 잠들어 있는 동안, 우리는 몰래 파티 장식을 했다. 잠에서 깨어나 침실을 나서는 순간 얼굴에 불이 켜지며 장식품과 선물을 보고 즐거운 듯 펄쩍펄쩍 뛴다. 케이크는 팬싯, 스파게티, 카르보나라, 팔라복처럼 장수를 상징하는 필수품이었다.
