Modern Parenthood

Vocabulary:

Child Rearing - the process of supporting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child

Controversial -  giving rise or likely to give rise to public disagreement, argument, and disapproval

Traditional Family - traditional family; child rearing within a legally and socially sanctioned union, usually between a man and a woman

Multiracial Family - family whose parents or ancestors are from different racial backgrounds

Co-parenting - share the duties of raising (a child) (used especially of parents who are separated or not in a relationship)

Single Parent - someone who is bringing up a child or children on their own, because the other parent is not living with them

Same-Sex Family - a gay couple living together and raising children within the relationship

Questions:

1. What comes to your mind when someone says child rearing or parenting?
2. Is parenting out of the traditional family normal or controversial in Korea? Why do you think so?
3. Do you think that there will be a difference in how a child grows up if he/ she was raised in a multiracial family?
4. In your opinion, which is a better scenario for a child, a co-parenting set-up or single parent household?
5. In your assessment, will your government allow same-sex union or same-sex marriage soon?
6. If you are a government official, will you allow gay couples to have and raise a child? Why or why not?
